The Unhackable PSP?!!!
We have to hand it to Sony. After struggling against software pirates for the first several years of the handheld console’s life, the company appears to have finally shut out the hackers for good. As of January 9, 2009, the newly released PSP 3000 remains unhacked, meaning that it has survived an impressive 83 days against the onslaught of hackers and the homebrew community, who are intent on unlocking its secrets and enabling it to run hacked custom firmware. PSP has lost to the Nintendo DS
L
ast night on the Spike TV Video Game Awards there were some big winners, but the Sony PSP was not among them. Grand Theft Auto predictably took game of the year, with other nods made to Metal Gear Solid 4 and Fallout 3. When it came to the all-important “Handheld Game of the Year” award, however, the PSP was snubbed. According to the VGA jury, the best handheld video game of 2008 was for the Nintendo DS. I think that I speak for the entire video game playing public when I say, “WTF?” Read the rest of this entry »

Joystick has recently posted a new mock-up created by of there reader Mat Brady. This combination of a PSP, IPhone and a Mobile Keypad looks to be one of the most compressed and crammed mockups we’ve seen yet that just could work. With the original PSP controls to play games, the lovely full keyboard to chat to friends and the Iphone interface to interact with, this could be one the most featured filled devices we’ve seen yet!

Japan PSP sales of last week: Still good?
Two weeks ago, the PSP utterly destroyed every other console in terms of sales by selling more units than every other console (PS3, PS2, X360, Wii, DSL), combined. Just last week, the PSP just missed the bar of continuing the double sales, with the PSP taking 49.59% of the market by selling 121k units.
So, did a similar selling trend occur for another week?
Well, the answer is no. The PSP is still the number #1 selling console on the market overseas, but did nowhere near as well as it has the past few weeks, selling 85,721 units ( about 35k less), but still claiming 43.87% of all consoles sold.
Also, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, the title mostly responsible for the burst in PSP sales in Japan, has dropped to become the number #2 game, outsold by Mario Kart Wii, selling over 1/2 a million in its first week out. The Wii, however, did not see a real boost in console sales.
Here are your official numbers:
- PSP: 85,721
- DS Lite: 47,158
- Wii: 46,296
- PS3: 8,232
- PS2 6,834
- Xbox 360: 1,147
total = 195,388
