PSP 3000 Official Specs
On August 19, Sony announced the PSP-3000 at the industry conference in Leipzig. Now, we have had the chance to see the full product specifications for the new model, detailed below. While this revision does not make as many changes as the PSP Slim, it does include some very important improvements over the previous model. Namely, a brighter, less reflective screen for viewing outdoors, a built-in microphone for Skype (and games?), and video output to (non-HD) interlaced television sets. Reportedly, the new LCD screen has twice the refresh rate and twice the color depth of the current PSP-2000 model, meaning that games will look even better than ever and that pesky ghosting problem will be a thing of the past. Officiall Announcement of PSP-3000 Model
While we have long suspected that they were working on a new version of the PSP, Sony has officially announced the new hardware at the Leipzig Gaming Conference, Europe’s version of America’s E3. The new hardware is a “dazzling” PSP-3000, available in Mystic Silver and the already familiar Piano Black. The revision ads some minor improvements, a new screen and some sligh cosmetic changes. But enough with the introduction, let’s get to the details! (more…)
New version of PSP coming soon! Meet PSP 3001
Today an FCC filing reports that the PSP will be getting a new version soon. What that new version contains is still unknown but for the most part it seems to contain newer, possibly more up to date wireless components. Some rumours state that it will also have a built in camera, built in mic, and a new home button of some sort.
Honestly I just wished it has another analog stick, more memory, a built in HDD, and possibly some more features. Of course that’s most likely what the PSP2 will contain. It seems like Sony has said that the PSP will have a shelf life of 10 years meaning that by the 7th year or so they will have some sort of PSP2 released as the PS1 followed the same pattern with the PS2, retiring 4 years or so after the PS2’s release. Putting the hardware aside, the PSP simply needs more epic titles like Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core and God of War, and less cookie cutter ports.

Can you guess the top selling console in Japan?
Without a new Monster Hunter title in sight, the PSP still managed to outsell every other console in Japan last week, including the Nintendo DS and Wii. Boosted by the release of a new color (metallic blue), Sony managed to sell 74,000 units, up by more than 20,000 over the previous several weeks. It is nice to see the handheld performing well in Japan, and we hope that some of that success will translate to new software development and sales in other territories. The poor Xbox 360 was in last place, selling only 4200 units.
Incidentally, the blue PSP looks hawt, and we hope that the company considers bringing it to our shores soon, given the success that it has achieved in Japan.
Japanese hardware sales for week ended July 20:
1. PlayStation Portable (74,024)
2. Nintendo DS (54,531)
3. Nintendo Wii (40,803)
4. PlayStation 3 (11,253)
5. PlayStation 2 (9535)
6. Xbox 360 (4208)
Check Your PSP serial - Help Solve a Murder
Police have one important lead in the gruesome stabbing deaths of students Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez last week. Apparently, a pair of Sony PSPs are mising from the apartment and presumed stolen by the perpetrators. London police said that the serial number of one of the missing PSP devices is SO1-0613169-C.
If you live in the UK and you recently purchased a used PSP, you can help solve this crime. Check your serial number (located on a sticker inside the battery compartment) to see if it matches the one taken from the victims’ apartment. If you find a match, be sure to contact police in the London metropolitan area immediately.
We know this is a bit macabre for a news item, but it would be nice to see the power of the internets and video game consoles used to bring justice, instead of being the usual target of negative media hype.
A teen shoot another teen because of PSP
Down over in Jacksonville, Florida, two teenagers were arguing when one decided to shoot the other. This is already tragic enough, but the “center” of this shooting is a PSP. Zachary Robinson, 17, shot another teenager twice before fleeing the scene. Robinson was subsequently captured and is now charged with aggravated battery. Fortunately, even though there was an art fair being set up at the location, no one was hurt.
We love our PSPs, but these kids went way too far. Also, it wasn’t specified who originally owned the PSP, but let’s not try to shoot each other over one, okay kids?
Japan - PSP Rises, DS Falls
The portable roles appear to have reversed.
July 3, 2008 - Famitsu publisher Enterbrain shared a report today on the first half of the year in games over in Japan. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who keeps up on Japanese sales trends, but the PSP was the star of the show.
Sony sold 1.96 million PSP units over the first six months of 2008. This put it atop the hardware heap — the first time the system has managed this feat for sales taken over a half year period. Perhaps more notable is that the system doubled its sales over the same period one year ago.
Nintendo’s two platforms took a close second and third place. Wii was the second best selling platform for the period with 1.72 million units, placing it close to its performance last year. The DS sold 1.59 million units. This may not seem to shabby, except when you compare it to last year’s performance of 3.71 million units over the same period.
The PlayStation 3 saw a Metal Gear Solid surge towards the end of the period to reach 540,000 units. This was a bit above last year’s half million performance.
PSP Phone. To be or not to be?
If the old saying is correct and there really is “truth to every rumor,” then there must be a whole lot of truth to the heavily repeated claim that Sony has plans to release a PSP-branded phone. (more…)
