GripShift allowed hackers to Boot Custom Firmware on PSP 3000

If the video below turns out to be real, then it looks like the PSP 3000’s recent run of 87 days without being hacked has come to an end. A team of French hackers have succeeded in booting custom firmware and running homebrew software on a PSP 3000 unit by exploiting a buffer overflow bug in the game GripShift. The team used a European copy of the game to achieve the result, however the same hack could also work with the American version of the game (currently selling for more than $100 on ebay). (more…)

The Unhackable PSP?!!!

The Unhackable PSPWe have to hand it to Sony. After struggling against software pirates for the first several years of the handheld console’s life, the company appears to have finally shut out the hackers for good. As of January 9, 2009, the newly released PSP 3000 remains unhacked, meaning that it has survived an impressive 83 days against the onslaught of hackers and the homebrew community, who are intent on unlocking its secrets and enabling it to run hacked custom firmware. Certain models of the PSP 2000 slim also remain unhackable because they have the same, newer motherboard (TA-088 v3) as the recently released “Brite” model. (more…)
